Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, widely known as NTR, was an iconic Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for three terms. Born in Nimmakuru, Andhra Pradesh, NTR rose to prominence in the Telugu film industry, becoming one of its most dominant stars. Over a career spanning four decades, he acted in over 300 films, portraying mythological characters like Lord Krishna and Lord Rama with unmatched distinction, which earned him a god-like status among the masses. Beyond acting, he was an acclaimed director and producer, establishing National Art Theater and receiving multiple National Film Awards. In 1982, NTR transitioned into politics by founding the Telugu Desam Party with a vision to safeguard the self-respect of Telugu people. His political entry was historic; within nine months of founding the party, he led it to a landslide victory in the 1983 assembly elections, ending decades of Indian National Congress dominance in the state. As Chief Minister, NTR pioneered populist welfare schemes, including the highly popular two-rupees-per-kilogram rice program, mid-day meals, and subsidized housing for the poor. He was also instrumental in advocating for state autonomy and uniting non-Congress opposition parties at the national level. NTR passed away in 1996, leaving behind a monumental legacy that continues to shape the cultural and political landscape of Andhra Pradesh and India.
