About

Leonard Bosack is an American computer scientist and technology entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of Cisco Systems, one of the world's leading computer networking companies. Born in 1952, Bosack earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University in 1979. While serving as director of the computer facilities for Stanford University's Computer Science Department, Bosack met Sandy Lerner, who managed the Graduate School of Business computer facility. Together, they developed a multi-protocol router based on Stanford's campus networking technology, enabling disparate computer local area networks to communicate seamlessly for the first time.

In December 1984, Bosack and Lerner co-founded Cisco Systems to commercialize multi-protocol router hardware. Under their leadership, Cisco became a key architect of early corporate networking and internet infrastructure. Following Cisco's successful initial public offering in February 1990, management conflicts with professional venture capitalists led to Lerner's termination in August 1990, prompting Bosack to resign in solidarity.

After selling their Cisco equity for approximately $170 million, Bosack and Lerner dedicated substantial resources to scientific research and philanthropic initiatives. Bosack later founded XNET Technologies to focus on high-speed communications and optical networking technology. In 2009, he received the IEEE Computer Society Computer Entrepreneur Award for his contributions to the networking industry.
