About

Lala Har Dayal was an Indian nationalist revolutionary and polymath who played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement, particularly through the founding of the Ghadar Party in the United States. Born in Delhi, he was an exceptionally brilliant student who studied at St. Stephen's College and later at Oxford University on a prestigious state scholarship. However, his strong nationalist convictions led him to reject his government scholarship and dedicate his life to ending British imperial rule in India. Har Dayal traveled extensively, spreading revolutionary ideas among the Indian diaspora. In 1913, he founded the Pacific Coast Hindustan Association, which came to be known as the Ghadar Party. Through its weekly newspaper, Ghadar, he advocated for a violent overthrow of British rule in India. His fiery speeches and writings inspired thousands of expatriate Indians, particularly Punjabi Sikh immigrants in North America, to return to India to organize an armed rebellion during World War I. To escape arrest by US authorities under pressure from the British government, Har Dayal fled to Germany and later lived in Sweden and England. In his later years, he transitioned away from active revolutionary violence, focusing instead on philosophy, literature, and academia, lecturing at several European universities. He died under mysterious circumstances in Philadelphia in 1939. His legacy remains that of a brilliant intellectual who sacrificed a promising academic career to ignite the spirit of freedom among overseas Indians.
