About
Kevin Patrick Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, and podcaster. He rose to fame with the low-budget comedy film Clerks in 1994, which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and starred in as the character Silent Bob alongside Jason Mewes as Jay. The film, shot in the convenience store where Smith worked in real life, won major awards at the Sundance Film Festival and launched his career. Smith's subsequent films, mostly set in his home state of New Jersey, include Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which collectively form the beloved View Askewniverse. In addition to filmmaking, Smith has built a massive cult following through his frequent public speaking engagements, Q&A sessions, and extensive podcasting network, the SModcast Network, which he co-founded in 2007. He is also a passionate comic book enthusiast, having written prominent runs for Marvel and DC Comics, and owns the comic book store Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey. In 2018, Smith survived a massive near-fatal heart attack, which prompted him to adopt a vegan lifestyle and lose significant weight. He continues to produce independent films, write comics, and cultivate his loyal fan base.
