About
Jürgen Schmidhuber is a pioneering German computer scientist widely recognized for his foundational contributions to artificial intelligence and deep learning. He is best known for co-developing the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network architecture with his student Sepp Hochreiter in 1997. LSTM revolutionized the field of sequential data processing, becoming a fundamental component in voice recognition, machine translation, and natural language processing applications used daily by billions of people on platforms like Apple's Siri, Google Translate, and Amazon's Alexa. Schmidhuber currently serves as the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Initiative at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. He is also the Scientific Director of the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA (Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence) and a professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Lugano. Additionally, he co-founded NNAISENSE, a Swiss-based startup focused on creating general-purpose artificial intelligence. Throughout his illustrious academic career, Schmidhuber has received numerous prestigious awards, including the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society's Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2016. His research covers a broad spectrum of AI disciplines, including reinforcement learning, evolutionary algorithms, unsupervised learning, and the formal theory of creativity. He remains an active, sometimes controversial, figure in the AI community, often advocating for the historical recognition of European contributions to modern deep learning technologies.
